An amicus brief is a document filed in a court case by someone who isn’t directly involved, but has a strong interest in the subject or outcome.
The case centers on whether employees can be forced to give up their right to take collective action against their employer, known as class-action. Evolution may have been our planet’s first recycler. When organisms evolved useful proteins, they tend to get re-used in unrelated processes. So, a single family of proteins may regulate the development of everything from the brain to the blood to the bones.
This is one reason that drugs often have off-target effects. While the drug was designed to latch on to a specific protein in one tissue, that protein or a close relative may be doing something important in a different tissue. While that’s generally viewed as a problem, it can also be helpful. Researchers are finding that some drugs can be effective against diseases for which they were never intended.
That may be the case for an asthma medication called clenbuterol. It and a series of related drugs came through a screen that targeted a very different disorder: Parkinson’s disease, caused by the death of specific nerve cells in the brain. And a search through the drug-use history of Norway suggests that the discovery is more than a fluke.

IFA 2017 is here and manufacturers have been holding press events for the past several days to show off their latest and greatest gadgets. GPS tech and wearable manufacturer Garmin is among them, taking to the stage a couple of days ago to introduce three new wearable products.
These arrived in the form of the vívoactive 3, its flagship, feature-packed watch that comes with its all-new mobile payments system, the vívomove HR, a stylish, hybrid smartwatch, and the vívo sport, the company’s latest fitness band (read an overview of the three devices here).
I had the opportunity to spend some time with the vívoactive 3 and vívomove HR during Garmin’s press event to learn a little more about them — here’s what you need to know.
The vívoactive 3 is a feature-packed sports watch aimed at those looking to lead a healthy lifestyle. It runs on Garmin’s own custom software, though it’s compatible with Android and iOS phones for advanced features like notification syncing (for emails, messages, missed calls etc). The device makes use of stainless steel design, circular watch face, and always-on Garmin Chroma display, said to offer good visibility even in strong outdoor light.
As you might expect, the vívoactive 3 puts a large focus on fitness: it comes with more than 15 sports apps covering a range of activities, with all-new profiles designed for things like yoga and elliptical exercises, and will allow you to download custom exercises through the Garmin IQ Connect platform and create your own. The vívoactive 3 can also keep track of reps and sets and, of course, will survive in both the pool and the shower.
Garmin’s fitness tracking features are helped by its proprietary “Elevate” wristband, which can monitor things like VO2 Max and heart rate variability (HRV). This, according to Garmin, can even assess your stress levels, but it might take a bit of setting up; it generally suggested that my stress levels were low though, while at a busy show like IFA, I can assure you that I was feeling anything but relaxed.
Garmin also included a new navigation control in its watch known as “Side Swipe.” This is employed instead of a dedicated button or dial to make navigating menus a little more intuitive. While it worked well enough at the show, for anybody familiar with other smartwatch products, it’s not a big deal — it literally just means swiping the watch face. I can scarcely believe Garmin trademarked it to be honest.
Garmin also says that the watch is suitable for scrolling with either a finger or a thumb, which strikes me as another minor addition, but maybe some people are particularly precious about that kind of functionality.
As for the battery life, Garmin promises up to seven days when using the device in smartwatch mode, and it’s said to survive up to 13 hours while making use of GPS tracking (the specific battery size hasn’t been discussed). These are impressive numbers as far as wearables are concerned – Source
It’s definitely an understatement to say that the Samsung Galaxy S8 has a more-than capable camera. From the sensor to the lens to the image signal processing, no one would deny this fact.
Huawei, however, has a few things to say about that.
The Chinese behemoth unveiled its new Kirin 970 processor today at the IFA conference in Berlin. In addition to cramming in 5.5 billion transistors on a 10nm manufacturing process, and putting artificial intelligence directly onto the SOC, they’ve also added not one but two image signal processors. That is, the part of the SOC that makes cameras work.
And as you’d expect, more ISPs should mean faster photos, and better photos. How much better? Well, we’ll have to wait until we see the 970 in an actual production phone before we have definitive results. But for now, Huawei is more than happy to serve up this image of how it says the 970 performs alongside the Samsung Galaxy S8 when it comes to what otherwise would be a blurry pic. Faster processing means less motion blur.
Is it really that simple? Huawei would like you to think so. (At least until you read the disclaimer at the event that said “All data used in this presentation is based on Huawei lab test results and are intended only for customers’ convenience.”
Samsung fans, however, probably aren’t finding anything convenient about this.

Mate 10 CPU features 10nm process, Neural Processing Unit, first Mali G72 GPU, 1.2Gbps 4.5G modem.
At the company’s IFA keynote in Berlin, Germany, Huawei CEO Richard Yu officially unveiled the new Kirin 970 processor, which will feature in its upcoming Mate 10 flagship phone.
Huawei is focusing on AI in the new processor, an octa-core chip built on a 10nm manufacturing process, with 5.5 billion transistors. Kirin 970 will enable AI on the Mate 10 and future Huawei phones, thanks to the new NPU (Neutral Processing Unit), which Yu says can deliver 25 times the performance with 50 times the power efficiency of a quad-core Cortex-A73 cluster, as found in the previous-gen Kirin 960.
In today’s presentation, the Huawei CEO showed a demonstration of photo recognition, showing the Kirin 970’s NPU crunching images 20 times as fast as a CPU, and emphasized how combining cloud-based AI and on-device AI can help to balance power efficiency and latency.
Other major features in Huawei’s new chipset:
A new dual ISP supporting improved noise reduction, 4-way hybrid autofocus and improved capture of moving subjects without motion blur.
A new 4.5G modem with 5CC carrier aggregation, 4x4MIMO, 256QAM, for up to 1.2Gbps speeds at Cat. 18.
The first ARM Mali-G72 GPU, featuring improved performance and efficiency, and a 12-core design.
Yu also explicitly confirmed for the first time that the Mate 10 series would use the chip, which will break cover at an event in Munich, Germany on October 16.

Huawei’s next-gen Mate flagship phone is coming on October 16th: get ready for the Huawei Mate 10. Details are still few on the phone, but here’s what we know.
You can expect both Huawei Mate 10 and a higher-specced Mate 10 Pro to be unveiled. Both will be powered by the Huawei Kirin 970 chipset, which Huawei unveiled at an IFA 2017 keynote. The Kirin 970 places a huge emphasis on artificial intelligence with a new on-board NPU (Neural Processing Unit) that can pull off impressive computational feats on-board the device, like performing image recognition on 200 photos in 6 seconds, versus the 120 seconds needed to do it on a CPU alone. The Kirin 970 also features dual image signal processors to make for sharper and quicker photos.
Huawei’s next flagship will run a 10nm chip with AI onboard.
The Mate 10 will also feature Huawei’s take on the reduced bezel trend in the form of a Full Vision bezelless display. Whether that will take the form of a Samsung Galaxy S8-style with thin side bezels, like the Essential Phone with the top and sides pushed right to the edge, or even the soon-to-be-unveiled iPhone 8 with its leaked nearly-entirely-bezel-free design remains to be seen.

LG took the wraps off its newest flagship this week, the LG V30. We’ve got the usual high-end smartphone specs: a Snapdragon 835 SoC, 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage, a 3300mAh battery, and an old version of Android—7.1 Nougat. What’s interesting are the display and the camera. The display is the first LG-made OLED display we’ve seen in some time, and the camera hits a new high with an f1.6 aperture.
We recently got to spend some time with the device, and the first thing that stands out is the aesthetic. The design is great; it’s a clear evolution-of and improvement-on the LG G6. The G6 was LG’s first phone with super-slim bezels, and on the V30 the bezels are even smaller. The ugly “LG” logo is gone from the bottom of the phone and the front glass is nicely curved to meet the sides, instead of the flat slab of glass used on the G6. Like the G6, the corners of the display are round, but again things are improved over the G6. The G6 did a clunky job of transitioning the screen corners into the rest of the display, but on the V30, the corners are a lot smoother and form a more natural, pleasing shape.

Huawei will unveil the Huawei Mate 10 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro smartphones at an event in Munich on October 16. The news was announced by Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group, on stage during Huawei’s IFA 2017 keynote.
Yu also confirmed the use of Huawei’s latest flagship processor, the Kirin 970, in the upcoming devices and said that the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro would be Huawei’s first full display smartphones. This means you can expect a screen-to-body ratio similar to what has been seen on the likes of the Galaxy Note 8 and Essential Phone to be featured on the phones.
The Huawei Mate 10 had previously been teased in a Huawei tweet which suggested it would arrive with a dual camera setup, while its implementation of the Kirin 970 was also suspected, but had yet to be officially confirmed.

The Mate 10 Pro is likely to be an even more powerful variant of the regular Mate 10, similar to the relationship the Mate 9 Pro had to the Mate 9 introduced last year. These phones featured the same Kirin 960 chip (what was Huawei’s flagship chipset at the time), but the Pro version arrived with a higher resolution (QHD rather than Full-HD) curved display and an option with more RAM and internal storage space.
While Huawei was light on details regarding the new smartphones, the company dished out plenty of information on the Kirin 970 chip — we’ll have more details on that in a separate article coming soon.

Huawei has announced its next-generation chipset for smartphones, the Kirin 970. It bets big on AI and comes with what Huawei calls a neural processing unit (or NPU) bringing on-device AI capabilities.
